Police scanner - Aviation use

l have a police scanner and l have an antenna from C. Crane Company. My

problem is that l have it programmed mainly for usage for aviation. l live

100 miles to the east away from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport

and l can hear aircraft transmitting about 50 miles west of MSP airport. l

have the tower and ground frequencies programmed in, but l cannot hear

them. So why can l hear aircraft about 50 to the west of Minneapolis/St. 
Paul International airport, but not directly from the airport? Thanks. />

It is because of line of sight.

The aircraft obviously are at a higher elevation and will provide line of

sight transmission to ground stations.

The tower station is at near ground level. Since it communicates with the  
aircraft which are at a reasonable high elevation, it doesn't need much
